The technology evolution in digital health has accelerated over the past decade, and the COVID-19 pandemic has served as the primary catalyst to usher in virtual healthcare products and solutions like never before. Digital Therapeutics (DTx) is a new category of digital health which includes mobile health software applications (apps) that offer evidence-based therapeutic interventions intended to prevent, manage, or treat a broad spectrum of physical, mental, and behavioural health conditions. DTx products are held to the same standards of evidence and regulatory oversight as traditional pharmaceutical therapeutics (Rx).

But is Canada ready to embrace the DTx revolution in healthcare? Will we be leaders or laggards? The Digital Therapeutic Alliance, a US-based industry association for DTx product innovators, industry partners, and health system stakeholders, has championed the FDA's regulation of this new class of evidence-based products and lobbied for new legislation to provide reimbursement of DTx solutions by the USA's Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In Canada, the path to market is still nebulous, and innovators and healthcare providers are looking for new guidance, policy and commercial precedents to bring these revolutionary products to market and benefit Canadians.

DTx have the potential to reduce costs to the Canadian healthcare system because they enable patients to get therapeutic interventions remotely, from their own home, using mobile technology and virtual care services put in place by the pandemic.

This webinar will provide an introduction to DTx with presentations from two innovative companies offering evidence-based DTx solutions, and will also address the current barriers to commercialization of DTx solutions in Canada and the changes that need to happen to open this new healthcare treatment opportunity for Canadians.
