Molecular genetics technology has rapidly advanced over the last decade with significant acceleration as a result of SARS-CoV2. Improved testing platforms, lowered costs, and a wider range of options available for patients have outpaced the ability of electronic health records to store and make use of genetic data. This session will discuss the complexities surrounding the life cycle of genomic information from the time of reporting to its incorporation into the EHR, to longer-term storage and access control.

Learning objectives include:

(1) identifying the technical challenges associated with accurately incorporating genetic results into the EHR for medical decision making;

(2) identifying the confounders to that integration;

(3) describing ethical “best practices” for genomic data use in an EHR (especially for vulnerable populations); and

(4) considering the potential legal implications of genomic data storage in the EHR and issues around access, information sharing, and non-discrimination.

Presented by:

Dr. Marsha Fearing, MD, MPH, MMSc.

Dr. Marsha Fearing is dedicated to Canada, and brings experience from multiple medical environments. In her 20  year background in medicine, she has worked as an Army Medical Service Corps officer in the 101st Airborne Division, a rapid deployment US Army unit in support of various worldwide medical needs. Her civilian graduate education was completed at Harvard Medical School, and she also has a Masters in Public Health from the Tulane University School of Tropical Medicine. Following medical school, she completed a residency in Pediatrics, a Chief Residency in Pediatrics, and Fellowships in Medical Genetics and Biochemical Genetics. She has worked in academic environments such as the Harvard Hospital System providing clinical care, as well as performing research and clinical trials  and served as a CLIA laboratory director. In addition, she has also supported  rural and public health missions including the US Indian Health Service Hospital system, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the state’s COVID-19 emergency physician support roster.  She was a platform presenter at HIMSS 2022 (#240) and AMIA and serves as an advisor on the Meditech Canada physician advisory committee.
