Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address the specific needs and challenges of aging adults through a range of intelligent assistive services. The combination of AI with the widespread diffusion of digital technologies in the lives of aging adults offers new opportunities to autonomously, privately and unobtrusively observe their daily activities, social connections and health status through smart living environments and wearable devices, and use this information to provide personalized assistance for senior living. The talk will explore how AI can support aging adults in maintaining their physical and mental well-being, independence and social connections through intelligent assistive services that include remote monitoring of health status, assistance in completing of daily living activities, detecting functional and cognitive decline over time, ensuring compliance to medications and helping care-givers provide personalized care. The talk will conclude with potential directions for leveraging AI for senior living.

    Syed Sibte Raza Abidi

    Syed Sibte Raza Abidi is Professor of Computer Science and Medicine at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. He is the scientific lead of the NICHE (kNowledge Intensive Computing for Healthcare Enterprises) research group that conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, healthcare and digital health. He has over 25 years of research and innovation experience of AI-driven health data analytics and health knowledge management. He has developed over 40 AI-driven digital health solutions targeting clinical decision support, clinical guideline execution, digital therapeutics, assisted living and personalized patient empowerment. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed research papers at top venues, secured over $19 million in research grants and supervised over 100 graduate students. He is the recipient of the Canadian Health Informatics Leadership Award, International Award for Innovation in Medical InformaticsResearch Excellence Awards and multiple best paper awards. He is the Board Member of International Association of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, IWK children’s hospital (Halifax) and past board member of Digital Health Canada.
