This session presents findings from BC SCRIBE, a collaborative evaluation of six ambient AI scribe tools across four British Columbia health authorities. Dr. Angel Arnaout and Dr. Maximillian Besworth will share results on documentation burden, note timeliness, clinician experience, and perceived quality of care. They will examine how clinicians used the time saved and why improvements in documentation efficiency did not automatically translate into additional patient visits.
The presentation will also explore the practical work behind responsible adoption, including privacy and security requirements, vendor collaboration, clinician support, and ongoing evaluation. Participants will leave with lessons for evaluating AI scribes, understanding their benefits and limitations, and creating the organizational conditions needed to translate individual clinician gains into broader health system value.

Dr. Angel Arnaout is a surgical oncologist, Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia, and Chief Medical Informatics Officer at British Columbia’s Provincial Health Services Authority. Her work brings together clinical practice, health system leadership, and the responsible implementation of digital health and artificial intelligence. She co-led BC SCRIBE, working with health authority partners to evaluate ambient AI scribes and establish a practical approach to their safe adoption in clinical care.
Dr. Maximillian Besworth, RN, MScN, PhD, Senior Director, Medical Informatics, Provincial Health Services Authority
Dr. Maximillian Besworth is a registered nurse, Senior Director of Medical Informatics at the Provincial Health Services Authority, and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Nursing. He contributes to the implementation and evaluation of BC SCRIBE, including research examining the effects of ambient AI scribes on documentation, care quality, and how physicians use time saved. His work connects clinical informatics with practical improvements in care delivery and clinician experience.
