Digital health tools are often procured and deployed with minimal real-world testing, leading to poor integration and added burden to users. To address this, while keeping pace with rapid digital change, we developed a Living Lab that measures the impact of digitization on administrative burden. The model integrates simulations, co-creation, clinical observations, and strategies for spread and scale.

Dr. Onil Bhattacharyya is the Frigon Blau Chair in Family Medicine Research at Women’s College Hospital, and director of the Institute for Health Systems Solutions and Virtual Care. He is the lead for the Centre for Digital Health Evaluation and the co-chair of the Canadian Primary Care Research Network. He practices family medicine and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.

Lauren Miceli is a Research Coordinator at the Women’s College Hospital Institute for Health Systems Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV), where she supports the Centre for Digital Health the Centre for Digital Health Evaluation (CDHE). This session presents findings from BC SCRIBE, a collaborative evaluation of six ambient AI scribe tools across four British Columbia health authorities. Dr. Angel Arnaout and Dr. Maximillian Besworth will share results on documentation burden, note timeliness, clinician experience, and perceived quality of care. They will examine how clinicians used the time saved and why improvements in documentation efficiency did not automatically translate into additional patient visits.

The presentation will also explore the practical work behind responsible adoption, including privacy and security requirements, vendor collaboration, clinician support, and ongoing evaluation. Participants will leave with lessons for evaluating AI scribes, understanding their benefits and limitations, and creating the organizational conditions needed to translate individual clinician gains into broader health system value.

This webinar will share outcomes from the Virtual Healthcare 101 (VHC 101) pilot, a library-based digital health literacy initiative co-designed with patient and community partners and delivered by the Virtual Care Program at London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London. 

As healthcare increasingly shifts to digital-first models, equity-deserving populations continue to face barriers related to digital literacy and awareness of virtual care options. VHC 101 addresses a vital question: How do we ensure that the future of healthcare includes everyone in a system that is increasingly relying on digital tools? Using a co-design methodology alongside our community and patient partners, we created a 90-minute workshop designed to introduce community members to virtual healthcare and digital system tools and resources to help improve participants' knowledge of and comfort with accessing virtual care. 

The presentation will highlight key findings from the initiative, including measurable improvements in participant comfort with technology and understanding of virtual care options, insights from library partners, and six key drivers of digital inclusion identified through the pilot. The session will also explore lessons learned and the ways in which we are building out the program to ensure that the future of healthcare truly works to bridge the digital divide.
